Welcome to The Community Shawl Project

My grandmother's nurese's cape

Founded in September 2022, The Community Shawl is my response to The Red Dress Embroidery Project (created by Kirsty MacLeod), for which I have been fortunate to have been able to arrange exhibitions and presentations on three occasions in Wales, including the first visit to Wales, when I curated its exhibition at the Bleddfa Centre in the winter of 2021.

The basis of many of my projects, and my art practice, is connection and the stories that result from this - especially connecting with other women and communities.

As both an artist and a facilitator, I am passionate about discovering

opportunities, particularly for those facing marginalisation, isolation or socio-economic barriers. We all deserve to have a platform, access creativity, and find or express our voices.

This interest led me to founding The Community Shawl Project. I instinctively felt it would reflect the themes of community - safety, belonging, and resilience; the symbology of the Welsh Shawl at its centre.

Each genrously donated piece of fabric, and its decoration, is intricate and beautiful, tells its own story, and is a symbol of love and connection. The warmth and comfort offered by the traditions of the Welsh shawls, given to those who need it, being passed through generations and communities, is exactly what the exquisite squares demonstrate.

I am so grateful to have met so many wonderful people through this Project, and want to extend my thanks to everyone.

You may be wondering - what is the significance of my grandmother's nurse's cape? You can read all about the story and some of the amazing people involved by clcking here.
